Our African Story

Our African Story

Our Africa story begins with God bringing us together in marriage. We were raised in God-fearinq homes that idealized missionary service, though our parents were not cross-cultural missionaries themselves.

We learned missionary stories as children, and we gave some of our first offerings as children to support missionaries in far-away lands. One of Gary’s vivid childhood memories, at ten years of age, was staying awake at night with another ten-year-old visiting MK (“missionary kid”) from Africa, plying him with nonstop questions. He was Elmer Schmelzenbach II, and little did we know that over twenty years later God would use his exciting book, Sons of Africa, to convince Emma Lou that He was calling us to Africa.
